The Lava Ape species was created by the [[Makuta]] using [[Virus]]es and [[Protodermis#Liquid Protodermis|Liquid Protodermis]] to be one of the Rahi to inhabit the [[Matoran Universe]].{{BookCitation|MGttU|63|entryname=The Makuta}}

Many Lava Apes took up residence on the Southern Continent. Several of these Lava Apes were borne along with the island of [[Voya Nui]] when it broke off of the mainland during the [[Great Cataclysm]]. The Lava Apes resided on the island, especially the [[Cape of No Hope]], for 1,000 years. However, when the [[Toa Mahri]] destroyed [[the Cord]] and returned Voya Nui to its former position on the Southern Continent, these Lava Apes may not have survived the descent.{{GregCitation|CwGF|page=411|post=10805479}}
