The sea surrounding Konora is permanently frozen for several kio out from the mainland, and many smaller settlements have been constructed on the ice. The frozen waters have earned the island its name, which translates to “the cold wild sea”. While the Kolhaki keep a few channels open for ordinary ship travel, the local vehicles of choice are ice boats – sail-powered sleds that allow for comfortable crossing of the frozen ocean. This mode of transportation extends inland as well, where the oftentimes-frozen rivers serve as a network for travel between craggy mountain spires, snow-covered forests and great expanses of seemingly-lifeless tundra.
